Start with the product, not the route
The route matters, but the product specification must drive every decision. A chilled dairy load, frozen food shipment, clinical material and temperature-sensitive cosmetic products may all require a refrigerated vehicle, yet their handling requirements can be very different.
Define the permitted temperature range, not just the target setpoint. Establish whether the goods can tolerate short operational fluctuations, whether they need continuous recorded monitoring, and whether they must remain segregated from other products. The wrong loading sequence can expose stock to unnecessary temperature changes during deliveries.
Monitoring must produce usable evidence
A displayed temperature is useful. A complete and retrievable temperature record is better. For compliance-led freight, businesses need visibility during the journey and evidence afterwards that the agreed conditions were maintained.
Real-time digital monitoring allows the transport team to identify a potential issue early, rather than discovering it at delivery. Prepare for customs and border disruption

Before appointing a provider, test how they manage the detail. Ask whether they operate dedicated refrigerated vehicles, how temperatures are monitored and recorded, how they handle customs coordination, and what happens if a border delay or temperature alert occurs.
You should also ask about vehicle suitability, driver training, load segregation, security, proof-of-delivery processes and the availability of out-of-hours support. For regulated products, request confirmation that the provider can work to your documented transport requirements. The answer should be specific to your consignment, not a general assurance.
